Tsunami victims: Best ways to give

Many of us want to do all we can to support the Tsunami survivors.

We are asking ourselves which nonprofits to support: Whom to trust; where the money will be applied immediately and will go the farthest.

There is no shortage of “lists of charities” going around. For what it’s worth, here is the list that I trust:

This list of trusted nonprofits was developed by Grantmakers Without Borders, an association of experienced international givers who have their ears to the ground. They carefully vetted each charity. (Their selection criteria are listed below.) These charities may be filling a void that the large charities, such as Red Cross, may be missing.

Please consider giving – it’s not too late! Tsunami survivors need support not only for their immediate survival, but to move on and rebuild their lives.

Grantmakers Without Borders has developed a list of organizations responding to the tsunami disaster for funders and donors interested in giving. Our selections are based primarily on the following criteria:

1. All organizations included on our list are known to Gw/oB staff and/or members and come with their recommendation.
2. With a few exceptions, we avoided the larger international NGOs, preferring instead to give exposure to less well-known but highly respected entities.
3. We sought organizations where a relatively small grant could make a big difference.
4. We sought to include organizations with strong and direct connections to local communities and organizations.
5. With a few exceptions, we chose organizations with US 501(c)(3) status so that foundation grants could be made without delay.
6. Our preference was to include organizations with a strong social justice agenda.
